Splendours of Royal Mysore -
The Untold Story of the Wodeyars

Launch at Bangalore - 4th March 2008

The magnificent Raj Bhavan, with its awe inspiring history of over 150 years, was a befitting venue for the launch of Vikram Sampath's first book "Splendours of Mysore" by His Excellency, the Governor of Karnataka, Shri Rameshwar Thakur. "Splendours of Royal Mysore", one of the most definitive accounts of the Wodeyar Dynasty, sketches this long and fascinating regime replete with wars, palace intrigues, romance, valour and deceit. From the genesis in 1399 to the age of glory under Raja Wodeyar, Ranadhira Kanthirava Narasaraja Wodeyar and Chikkadevaraja Wodeyar, to the times of spineless monarchs who let the reigns of the kingdom slip into the hands of the powerful ministers, the book revisits the ups and downs of the Dynasty over 600 years.

The book launch at this historic venue was attended by Maharajakumari Meenakshi Devi Avaru of the Mysore Royal Family, among others. The event comprised the official release of the book and the presentation of its first copy to His Excellency, the Governor of Karnataka, followed by the screening of a documentary film on the "Splendours of Royal Mysore - The History and Ethos of the Princely State.

Speaking on the occasion the Governor said "I stand amazed at the efforts of the young author, Shri Vikram Sampath, who is not a historian as such, to have so patiently and diligently researched and documented this history and that too from such a tender age. There was a dire need for a book of the kind we see here today, that talks about these lesser spoken facets of our history. I am sure this book on Mysore would be widely appreciated and read by many of the young readers, who could easily identify themselves with the author."

There was a reading from select passages of the book by members of a theater group. The evening ended with discussions over coffee and snacks with a distinct Mysore flavour, on the exhaustive research and collation of the history of the Mysore Royal family.
