Splendours of Royal Mysore -
The Untold Story of the Wodeyars

Book release in Chicago - 30th August 2008

Splendours of Royal Mysore - The Untold Story of the Wodeyars was launched in the United States under the aegis of the Association of Kannada Kootas of America (AKKA). Over the years, the bi-annual World Kannada Conference of AKKA has become one of the most talked about and sought after cultural congregations in the US and also back in the State of Karnataka. The 5th AKKA Conference was held at the Rosemont Convention Hall in Chicago. The meet which attracted about a 4000 strong delegation from various parts of the world was inaugurated by Karnataka Chief Minister Shri B. S. Yeddyurappa.

Many eminent personalities from the state—thinkers, poets, writers, musicians, dancers, theatre and film personalities had been invited to participate in the conference. The book was released at the main auditorium of this prestigious conference, by noted Kannada writer Shri S. L. Byrappa, in the presence of many other eminent litterateurs like poet Shri Chandrashekara Kambara and Shri Jayant Kaikini.

In the parallel literary sessions, the book was later thrown open for a discussion and review. Smt. Nalini Maiya, a noted literary figure in the United States herself and Chair of the AKKA Literary events, did the ‘Pustaka Parichaya’ or Introduction and review of the book. She praised the objectivity of the author and his modern perspective on the many myths and legends of Mysore history like the foundation of the dynasty by Yaduraya, the famous curse of Talakad of Rani Alamelamma, the portrayal of Tipu Sultan and so on.

Speaking on the occasion, author Vikram Sampath stressed the need for a book of this kind in modern times—one that gave reason for pride and contentment about achievements of the past in a modern era where most Kannadigas are lost in a sense of identity crisis. Instead of languishing in jingoism and virulent defence, a thorough understanding of the rich heritage that we inherit and the cosmopolitanism that we cherish becomes important and Mysore history holds the mirror to the formation of Karnataka of today. Noted poet Jayant Kaikini presided over the event and praised the efforts of the author.
