S Balachander | A Biography


Launch at Mumbai - 19th February 2012

The Fine Arts Society of Chembur hosted the Mumbai launch of 'Voice of the Veena' on 19th February 2012 as part of the Indradhanush Carnatic music festival series. In the presence of a packed audience at the FAS Hall, Dr Chidambaram, Scientific advisor to the Prime Minister and renowned Carnatic vocalist and the author's guru Smt Bombay Jayashri launched the book. Smt Shantha Balachander too was present on the occasion, along with Mrs Chidambaram and members of the Fine Arts Society who graced the dais. Dr. Chidambaram found the book 'extremely readable, absorbing and well-researched' and recounted anecdotes from the book related to SB's personal life, his marriage to Shantha and also the Swati Tirunal controversy. Smt Shantha Balachander mentioned that she had been receiving rave reviews for the book from many of her friends who found it 'unputdownable'. She thanked Vikram for taking the effort to resurrect the memory of the indomitable genius. Smt Bombay Jayashri was appreciative of her student's efforts which she mentioned 'make everyone of us and the whole country proud of him' as this was the valuable cultural heritage of India which the author has been trying to preserve through his painstaking efforts. The launch was followed by a delightful concert of Smt Bombay Jayashri where she dedicated several ragas and compositions to the late Dr S Balachander.
